This photographic series explores capturing people displaying their public identities but looking for a hint of their true selves coming out. The photographs utilize street photography combined with portraiture. With social media and photography being incredibly popular, I feel as if most of the millions of photographs made everyday don’t show the full picture of a person or intentionally show a manufactured personality. I wanted to use that social context to provide a basis for making photos that search for more authenticity and exist as being more than a fabricated aesthetic or for a couple likes. These photos capture the moment and emphasize that point in time where a person is free to be who they are surrounded by strangers.
I began this series because of my curiosity with people and what they reveal when they think nobody's looking. Except I also included photographs where people realized the camera was on them and caught their expression before they fully realized what was happening. The photographs capture moments that the subject doesn’t realize others outside their vicinity are witnessing, illustrating an openness within the person's personality. This gives the audience the chance to connect what the subject is feeling, which I hope gives us the opportunity to be more empathetic, caring, and open to new experiences with others around us.
